6 Core Truths

Crunches are not enough: These six moves target your deep abdominal muscles -- to keep your whole system looking and feeling beautifully balanced.
There's much more to your belly than meets the eye. Most people target the six-pack surface muscles but neglect the deep abdominal ones, namely the transversus abdominis, iliopsoas, and diaphragm. Not only do these key players cinch your waist, they enhance crucial functions of your body -- breathing, digestion, and relaxation -- and help you stand up straighter. They are the source of your center of gravity. "When you engage and strengthen this internal support system, it's like accessing an additional power source," says Jill Miller, a Los Angeles-based yoga teacher and creator of the Core Integration fitness DVD. But you improve oxygen flow, increase your energy levels, and feel more grounded. You still need to work the outer muscles, too. "In real life, the core muscles never work alone. They interconnect with all the muscles of the body to provide mobility and balance," says Eva Pelegrin, founder of Attune Holistic Fitness in New York City. Try this routine for a week and you could start to see a toned tummy that functions as well on the inside as it looks on the outside.
1. Revolved Ab Pose
What It Does
Helps you use your abs in concert (unlike crunches, which isolate one muscle group)
How To Do It
Lie on your back with your arms in the shape of a T and legs lifted so they're perpendicular to the floor. Shift hips a few inches to the left, then exhale and drop both legs slowly to the right, stopping before they touch the floor. Hold for a deep breath, exhale, and return to the starting position. Repeat on the other side. Alternate for 20 reps, 10 on each side.2. Abdominal Vacuum

What It Does Stretches the diaphragm and other deep core muscles; massages the colon, stomach, and other digestive organs to improve functioning

How To Do It
Lie on your back, knees bent, feet on the floor. Inhale and raise arms overhead behind you. Lift your spine one vertebra at a time until your hips are high. Exhale as you relax your abs, lowering your spine down. A natural vacuum will draw your belly in. When your hips are on the floor, lower hands to start position. Repeat 7 to 10 times.

3. Elevated Leg Lift
What It Does
Works the diaphragm and the iliopsoas muscles; improves your posture
How To Do It
Lie on the floor with your pelvis resting on a cushion or towels. Reach arms overhead, palms face up. Engaging your core, raise the left leg and lift the right an inch off the floor. Hold and breathe deeply for 30 seconds. Repeat with the other leg, alternating 15 times on each side.

Tone the Outsides
Eva Pelegrin designed these moves, which primarily work your outer abdominals and upper body, to improve your posture, take pressure off your lower back, and support you all day long.
1. Basket Twist
What It Does
Improves spinal flexibility while toning core, back, and arms
How To Do It
Sit on the floor and hold a weighted ball or any heavy object (even a basket of magazines); bend knees slightly. Lean torso back and draw navel in while keeping the spine straight. Contract your abs and move ball or weight from side to side, keeping abs tight. Do 2 to 3 sets of 10 on each side.
2. Leg Thread
What It Does
Improves agility, cardiovascular health, hip flexibility, and stamina
How To Do It
Crouch on toes with feet shoulder distance apart, palms on floor, navel drawn in. Pivot on ball of right foot, rotate hips right, and extend your left leg out to the side , keeping it parallel to floor. Repeat with right leg. Alternate legs quickly. Do 3 to 5 sets of 10 on each side.

3. Superwoman
What It Does
Strengthens the core while toning arms and upper body
How To Do It
Start in a push-up position, knees on the floor, palms resting on a small towel. Draw shoulders down, navel in. Without arching your lower back, slowly move your hands forward until your chest touches the floor. Release and return to start. For more of a challenge, use upper body to slide hands back to starting position. Do 2 to 3 sets of 10 reps each.

Well I finished my sugar cleanse last weekend and I did so so well! I went to my friend's bridal shower and did not touch the cake or cookies or anything! I can't believe how good I was! That night I celebrated with such a good dinner at Briton's house with scallops salmon, quinoa, and FROZEN YOGURT! I love Golden Spoon more than anything in the entire world and after being so good for an entire week I really felt like I deserved a treat! I even had red wine with dinner and a martini later on at the Balboa Saloon. Anyways it was a delicious night and I still lost weight over the weekend so I was very very excited!

My half marathon training is going pretty well too! I definitely still feel like my Achilles tendon is a little tense and my ankle is being a little b.... as well but it's nothing like BAD pain. I'm stretching it, massaging, icing, taping.... and I don't feel pain when I run it's only when I massage it or it just feels like tense post runs. Either way I am managing it and that makes me happy because a year ago I would have done nothing and kept running and complained when I really got hurt. I feel like I'm really getting better at taking care of myself and it feels good =).
The A+ Team running group (that name always makes me smile) ran 7 miles last Saturday and although we were not altogether we still all ran on our own time. I ran with Briton and his cousin Devon. Briton was way faster than us but we managed to stay around a 9 min mile throughout the run and I think that's good enough for my long runs. We had breakfast at Rose's Donuts afterwards and it was delicious as always!
My pace is a little faster when I run my short runs during the week. Both my 4 miles runs were around an 8.4 min/mile and my 2 mile fast run I ran around a 7.5 min/mile. I'm proud of myself, I'm running better than ever and taking care of my body at the same time. From the point of view of someone who CONSTANTLY gets hurt from pushing herself too much it is seriously something to be proud of!

In other news, I am obsessed with CorePower Yoga, still. I take one class there a week (prices are a little to steep for me) and I look forward to that day every week! Sweating, while stretching and strengthening my core for an hour makes me feel so good there is no comparable feeling! I leave my yoga classes feeling cleansed and refreshed! Plus I'm sure it helps with my sore joints from running 4X a week!

I have a special recipe for you guys this week!! I made a whole bunch of Kale chips this week and holy mama it is such a yummy treat and it is SO healthy, you can literally eat A LOT without feelings bad at all!

KALE CHIPS RECIPE

One ENTIRE bag of Kale (I got the pre cut pre washed one from Trader Joes)
Cut or take out all the fat white stems from the leaves
Rinse and dry the kale (as best as you can in one of those spinner thingies 8)
Put it in a bowl and put about two tablespoons more or less if you want it's really your choice of Olive Oil on it
Put some Sea Salt on it (not too much)
Add any other spices that you want on it. I added Provence Herbs because they are so darn yummy!
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees
Leave them in there for about 15 minutes, take them out, mix them up, flip them over move them around and put them back in the oven for about 5 minutes but be careful, watch them so they don't burn!
Take them out of the oven and enjoy! I promise they are SO delicious! Let me know what you think!

Thanks for reading again peeps <3 I think I'll post a workout this weekend so stay posted XO

Cleansing, Training & a yummy recipe 8)

Hi again! So my last blog got into the sugar cleanse I started on Monday. I am still doing it! 3 days in and it's actually easier than I thought. Not chewing gum is pretty easy and not having soda has its moments. I had my oatmeal mixed with egg whites for breakfast followed by an AMAZING "All Hail Kale" salad from the Veggie Grill (by Trader Joes in the UCI center). That salad was delicious, if you are a fan of salads and you haven't tried kale you should, it's amazing with the right dressing. Here is a website that I really like that has a recipe for the All Hail Kale salad you should definitely try making it at home it is delicious! http://toneitup.com/blog.php?Veggie-Grill-for-We-Love-Food-Fridays-Best-Vegetarian-Healthy-Restaurant-5014 . Let me know what you think. I had a pear as a snack and for dinner my mom made fondue which we haven't had since two summers ago when we went back to France! It was soooo delicious. My mom and I substituted the bread for raw veggies (cauliflower, broccoli, sugar snap peas, and mini tomatoes) as we are both gluten intolerant. Yes we are lactose intolerant as well but you can only sacrifice so much at a time. Although not having the bread to dip in the cheese was depressing, the veggies made an excellent substitute. I had peaces of pineapple and some green grapes for dessert while the boys (my brothers, my boyfriend, and my father) had iiiiccee cream. That part is always a little harder for me to not indulge but I did good, I was strong. So yea, I feel great, no real cravings yet. Well I do have a headache tonight, so maybe that's part of it? My brain isn't getting enough sugar haha. I also realized that my friend's bridal shower is Saturday and not Sunday so I haven't decided if I will end the cleanse with a treat at her shower or if I end with a bang and see if I can resist all the yummy treats that will be there in front of my nose! You guys should help me decide! POST COMMENTS!
In other news I did mention that I am training to run a half marathon with my boyfriend, his aunts, and his cousin. His aunt told me that they were doing it 2 or 3 weeks ago when we were in Lake Arrowhead for the weekend and that's when we started training with them. We have been on the Fitness magazine half marathon training for beginners schedule and we run 4 times a week with Saturdays being our long runs. We have Mondays for cross-training and Fridays off =). I actually started with the half marathon training for intermediate runners but when my left Achilles tendon started hurting I decided to slow down and run the easier plan with them. I ran the OC half two years ago and finished in 1:55 but I didn't pay or register so I never got a number or medal. Then last year I trained but a little late for the OC full marathon and after my 20 mile training run my left knee gave out and I unfortunately could not run the race. This summer after finally fixing my knee for good I got a stress fracture in my right foot. My foot is now all better and of course something else had to start hurting. I have been icing, rubbing, massaging, epsom salt soaking, KT taping, and it's much better =). I've been able to run all the training runs so far so I'm really hoping my Achilles doesn't get any worse. As long as I stay on top of it I should be okay!! (yay).
Today I ran 2 fast miles as part of my training. Tomorrow I'm supposed to run 3 (not fast...just normal) but I'm thinking I'm going to run 4 miles instead.... (I probably shouldn't). Then Saturday we're going to run 7 miles!!! I can't wait to see how my body holds up!
Again, thanks for reading and stay tuned for more =)

and ps- join me for a run or for some hot yoga sometimes. I love company <3

Sweet tooth gone wild!

Hi everyone, my name is Chloe (aka Cakezilla these days). Before thanksgiving 2011, my brother, my mother and I decided to start counting calories with the main purposes of losing weight, being and staying healthy. I have always been very athletic (workouts at least 4 days a week) and pretty healthy when it comes to food. My mom has always cooked all of our meals and tried encouraging home cooked meals over fast foods and frozen foods. I don't mean to brag when I say that I consider my family pretty healthy!
Because I have always been so athletic, I have also always been heavier than most girls my size (muscle weighs more than fat...ya ya I know you know), and people have always looked at me crazy when I told them I weighed 148 lbs. 148 lbs can seem like a lot for a 5 foot 4 inches tiny chick I guess.
Anyways so counting calories is pretty tough at first, but once I set my mind to something, I usually see it through. I had the goal to get back to what I weighed when I met my current boyfriend 4 years ago. That meant losing 18 lbs to be 130 lbs total. It is now the end of March and I weigh between 124-127 lbs depending on if I was good or bad the days prior =p.
I have gone beyond my goal and now am more or less just happy to stay at this weight as I don't think it would be healthy for a muscular person like me to weigh less than what I do. I don't want to go under 120 lbs.
To get to my main point for today's introductory blog, I have consequently lost all and any control I had over my sweet tooth. I don't expose myself to cupcakes, cake, ice cream, pie, and so on so when I am exposed to such foods, I turn into....yes you guess it.... Cakezilla. It has become a definite problem. For example this weekend my boyfriend and I were invited to one of our friend's birthday party. They had Sprinkles cup cakes for everyone. Here is what happened in every little detail: I saw the box of Sprinkles and then saw people eating the mouth watering cupcakes. I proceeded to get off my ass and turn to Briton to say "OH! CUPCAKES ARE OUT, I'M GETTING ONE!" I proceeded to the box and got the one that looked the most coconutty just to bite into it and realize it was more vanilla-y with white sprinkles on top. Either way I didn't care I ate it so fast (cake first, frosting last...duh) it was the most delicious thing I had ever tasted and I automatically decided I wanted another but that I would wait until later, just to make sure everyone had at least one before fatty over here could get seconds. Then I actually saw birthday girl with the cupcake I had looked for. White with what was obviously coconut on top of the most likely coconut flavored frosting (god my mouth is watering right now). And birthday girl, god bless her with all her sweet tooth control ladylikeness, ate her perfect cupcake so so slowly, set it down a few times, before getting back to it and this whole cupcake dance drove me completely mad. I went crazy trying to plot how I could maybe steal it? Or maybe go into the kitchen to see if there were more cupcakes like that one? That cupcake was the only thing I could think of. I ended up leaving early (no, not because of the cupcake) but that was the only thing that saved me from going completely insane anyways. Anyways I didn't think much of it, ha, I'm pretty sure I only thought of that damn cupcake, even the day after. On Sunday we went to my boyfriend's moms house where I swore to myself I would have better control and be good with dessert. So I didn't have a lot of appetizers, I had about 3 chips. I didn't have any drinks, and I was very good with dinner. Salad, pulled pork, veggies. Then came desert and I had chocolate cake a little bit of vanilla ice cream and I think I was pretty good with that too. I got a small piece of cake so nice control there. But then once the sugar had hit my tongue, I just wanted more. His mom has a lot of snacks around the house and I started snacking....yes...after dinner!!! I had a few m&ms here and there, some other chocolate candies, and then I found a bag of cranberry, vanilla, covered almonds and ate like half the bag, and then more chocolate candies.... and I don't stop until I feel sick about it.
So to end today's blog, I have decided to go on a sugar cleanse to try and get rid of Cakezilla. I have a bridal shower to attend next Sunday and I would like to show some control there.
Today would be considered day 1 of my sugar cleanse. I had oatmeal for breakfast, a Mediterranean style salad with olive oil and balsamic vinegar for lunch with some plain yogurt and a pear. Nuts and a carrot for snacks, and for dinner pork cooked with bell peppers, brown rice, plain yogurt and pineapple. Although my brothers had chocolate ice cream and I had a tiny little teaspoon of it before I realized what I was doing.....So wops on that but I won't count it it was so small. Oh and I also gave up sodas and chewing gum because I was CLEARLY addicted to those as well and I think that's because they taste sugary!!! I need to get over my sugar addiction!!! I have seriously created a monster!
So yay day one conquered. I will let you guys know how I'm doing tomorrow! Oh and I'm also training for a half marathon with my boyfriend Briton, his aunts Sharon and Claudia, and his cousin Devon so I will make that part of my blog tomorrow!! This one is long enough!

Thanks for reading, hope I didn't bore you too much!!! <3
